The rough ride which can result, has led to the units being nicknamed Nodding Donkeys.
They were initially built for use on rural branch lines. However, as of September 2011 they are mainly used on busy commuter routes in the major cities in the north of England, with some also in use on local services around Cardiff and on Devon branch lines. Under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, all public transport will need to be accessible by 2019. Pacers do not meet this requirement and so may have to be withdrawn by the end of 2019
